Sandy Meyer, wife of retired farmer Marshall Meyer, spent several decades admiring the Colonel Hankinson property from afar. Many times she’d go to Marshall saying, “I want that.” His reply was a steady, “Sorry, you can’t have that.”
In June of 2010, while enjoying an evening drive around Lake Elsie, they noticed a “for sale” sign on the property. Despite the house being empty for many years, Sandy saw it’s potential for a Bed & Breakfast. She turned to Marshall and said again, “I want that.” This time, much to her surprise, Marshall replied, “I do too.”
On December 1, 2010 Marshall and Sandy Meyer became the proud owners of a rather dilapidated historical home. Renovation began immediately. Ceiling repair, updating the wiring, adding plumbing, insulating, renovating the 3rd floor, all these things needed to be done. They held on to an ambitious goal of celebrating the Town of Hankinson’s 125th Anniversary Celebration on July 1, 2011 as their Grand Opening date. Truly ambitious indeed, but they accomplished it.
All the rooms were rented. They even had direct descendants of Colonel Hankinson stay with them.
People came in droves to see the work put in to this historical home. It was a full and wonderful weekend.
The years since have only gotten progressively better and busier. With Sandy’s passion for cooking, gardening, and hosting, Lady on the Lake Bed and Breakfast has been a dream come true.
